Ecosia is the free search engine which puts its advertising profits into planting trees. Switch from Safari or other search engine apps, it’s very simple way to plant more trees and avoid climate change at no cost to you!
2. TOO GOOD TO GO
Did you know a third of all food goes to waste worldwide? Too Good to Go is here to help solve the problem. Get discounted food from bakeries and cafes which would otherwise go to waste.
Giki is a brilliant way to be greener when shopping in UK supermarkets. Use the app to scan barcodes on products and see how sustainable they are. The app covers all sorts of areas such as whether items are made in the UK and if they're using sustainable palm oil.
4. ELECTRIC HIGHWAY
Electric Highway is green energy supplier, Ecotricity's app to help make it easier travelling around the UK in an electric vehicle. It gives you access to the 300 or so pumps on UK motorways and gives you a live feed so you can see the availability of each pump for better journey planning.
HappyCow is a great way to help find vegan-options for restaurants, cafes and stores in over 180 countries. Reducing meat and dairy consumption is a brilliant way to help prevent deforestation and climate change.
Refill is a brilliant tool that helps you find where you can refill your reusable bottle on-the-go. It includes locations of community taps and local businesses who will let you refill. Less than 30% of people in the UK refill their water bottles even though we have some of the best quality tap water in the world!
7. VEGETARIAN SOCIETY RECIPES
Reducing your meat consumption is a great way to go greener. Uninspired as to what you can make from plant-based options? The Vegetarian Society Recipes app offers a great selection of ideas and easy to make dishes, available on Android and iOS.
8. GOOD FISH GUIDE
One for all the seafood lovers. Fishing can be done in a sustainable way to prevent damage to wildlife and the Good Fish Guide app is here to help. Make advised choices as to which fish are coming from well managed sources as well as recipes to help cook them!
Olio helps you to prevent food waste. Sometimes we don't plan so well and end up with more food than we can get through. Perhaps you're going away on holiday and have food which will go off before you return. Or a family member brought too many desserts when they came round for dinner. Well Olio is here to solve the problem, simply take a photo and description and share the location with other users and arrange when they can come to collect, easy!
Apps to avoid food waste are the way forward! Karma is another app which brings you closer to better priced takeaway food which would otherwise go to waste! For the UK it's currently London-based but in time will no doubt spread across the country. Available on Android and iOS.
